what is a consultation like?
Interior consultations are completed in one appointment, and can take anywhere from an hour, to a few hours, depending on the number of rooms, and our discussion. For interiors, I specify Benjamin Moore "Color Stories" full-spectrum paint, and English wallpapers. (For more info about Color Stories paints, please see "my story" and "FAQ" pages.)
Once I arrive, we will walk through the rooms that you would like me to consult on, and you'll tell me a bit about how you use each room, and how you would like to feel in the rooms – think "relaxed" or "energized" – whatever works for you.
Then with my notes in hand, I'll ask for a few minutes in a quiet space, and I'll start to build a color palette based on our discussion, incorporating the architecture of the space, and where the room is situated (what it's next to, and how the sun travels through the room) into my creative process. Once I have an initial palette picked out, I'll ask you to join me again, and we'll do a second walk-through – only this time, I'll show you the colors I think will work, and I'll show you why they work.
The collaboration starts when I arrive, and is especially important as I show colors – if anything isn't right, you only have to let me know – you cannot hurt my feelings by saying something isn't working for you. I do my best to anticipate your needs, but I need your partnership and input to make sure we get to the perfect colors for you.
Once we have settled on the complete color palette, I'll return to my studio to create your color map, and it should arrive within 7 to 10 days via USPS Priority Mail.
If you need your color map faster – just ask. I can create a digital color map within 24 hours, email that you. I can also do a rush physical color map, just let me know.
Exterior consultations are completed in 2 appointments, both around an hour. For exteriors, I specify Benjamin Moore paints, from their Color Preview, Affinity, Historic and Colonial Williamsburg collections.
Once our initial appointment is set, I'll email you a PDF of a questionnaire that you can use as a tool to think about how you want to update your exterior – the questions are simple (there won't be a test!) – but it helps to take the abstract ("I want to update my exterior") into the concrete ("I want a craftsman color palette that feels modern").
At the start of our first appointment, we'll go over the questionnaire and talk about your needs and desires for the final result. Then, I'll take photos of your exterior as we further discuss any specific requirements regarding your exterior – and we'll set up the second appointment for about 10 days out.
Then I'll be back with a minimum of 3 color palettes for your exterior – and I'll present color renderings using the photos I took, so you'll be able to "see" what your place will look like in the new colors. I'll also attach Benjamin Moore large-size swatches, and we can look at them outside to get a feel for what that colors look like in different light (direct sunlight, in shade, etc.)
You'll be able to keep the renderings and swatches to look at them at different times of day to further get a feel for the new colors.
Once you know which color palette you like, you just let me know, and I will create your color map, with a "what goes where" document. All that will be packaged for you and it should arrive within 7 to 10 days via USPS Priority Mail.
If you need to get an HOA or architectural review board's approval before moving forward, just let me know, and I can send you the rendering of your color palette choice, plus a digital color map for their review. So far I have a perfect record with meeting the needs of my clients' review boards – all my color palettes for my clients have been approved on the first submission.
